Kovilj

A settlement that sprang up around the monastery of the same name that was built, according to tradition, as a sign of the peace between the Serbian and Hungarian emperors in the 13th century. The monks of this monastery are famed for their honey, rakija, cheese, ajvar (tomato and pepper preserve) and icon-painting. There is a visit to a bakery where bread is baked in the traditional fashion, to a mulberry rakija distiller’s, a famous winery, as well as artists’ studios and an old blacksmith’s workshop, plus horse-drawn carriage rides and boat rides along the arms of the Danube in the special nature reserve. Specialities are fi sh and game goulash.
